In Memory of Bill Morris

Personal, Relationships

A good friend passed away last week. I did not see him often, but I always  remember him distinctly. Bill Morris was quite a character. He was founder of the William Morris Group in Jackson, Mississippi. The business took a lot of time and dedication. Bill knew that and as a business leader, he had to serve as an example for his team at The Morris Group. Always guided by the values he embraced and lived by.

I said Bill Morris was a character. While running the business, he found time for other interests he loved. Writing, painting, music, Ole Miss! … and more. Bill told me that these pursuits were “sent” to him by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a very deeply spiritual man

Now Bill had one peculiar behavior trait. He could talk and talk… and talk. And then he would talk some more. But because he was so sincere when he spoke, I always listened with interest. (Oh please, just a part of it.)

Bill loved to sing. You could be with him, and suddenly he would break out in song. I’m not sure his audiences were as thrilled to hear Bill sing, as he was. But though the notes were a little off key. His enthusiasm for his music was infectious. He told me about the key role he played in the growth and development of the Moonglows. An American vocal group from the 1950s that pioneered early acts of rock ‘n’ roll. They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1999. They gave Bill credit for much of their success.

I served as a consultant to Bill’s firm for a number of years. He wanted to me to help him with the direction of the firm and the effectiveness of the people on his team. I interviewed each member of the team. Found them well qualified and committed to their work. Bill was always open to my suggestions. He was clear that what we did together had to align with his values. We had things we had to address. One being the time taken when meeting with one of his team members. Thankfully, he and I quickly established a trusting relationship. This allowed me to address issues, like the length meetings with him. Having worked with 50+ lfirms or more, The William Morris Group has always been one of my favorites.

Last spring my grandson was looking at colleges. Of course, many kids at this age are unsure what their best choice should be. My grandson Jake was no exception. A number of years ago, Bill provided me with a copy of a pictorial book he put together, vividly displaying the highlights of Ole Miss … the University of Mississippi. It was truly exceptional. Things like the history of the Manning family. The beauty of the campus. I told Jake, “Why don’t you take a look at this let and me know what you think.” I handed him the book. The next day, Jake came to me and said, “PopPop, this book is amazing! I am going to Ole Miss!” Jake is in his freshman year there and absolutely loves it.

Bill Morris may no longer be with us. But his impact on others, like Jake… has been enormous. Fueled by his deep faith in God. And his love of all he touched. There will be memories, and great funny stories for sure. But I think his legacy will be his undying commitment to his faith. And how it guided him to always give of himself. Live the exceptional life he did.

Godspeed, Bill … well done.
