Why I write …

Spirituality

“Cuneiform” is an ancient writing system that was first used around 3400 BC. Said to be the very first writings. Writing. An ancient art. Simply timeless. This blog. Close to 180 posts so far. Not without effort. But in many ways so natural, therapeutic. And I find so very revealing as well.

A dear friend recently, thoughtfully sent me a few verses. “ … and they happily made me think of you.” he said. So this morning? On writing. Why I write …“A spiritual discipline … stirrings of the heart.”

Writing is driven by feelings more than thoughts. The feelings I have when I write spur thoughts. Not vice versa. “Recording experiences that express what we’re living. To store significant events, inspirations.”

Messages’ that somehow arrive. So true. Writing for me. Very early in the morning. For hours at a time. Timeless. I slow so when I write… even as the clock races.“… writing opens a Deep Well”

Honestly, words don’t exist that describe my feelings sometimes. It’s a calling of sorts. I have to write. Go to the “Deep Well.” Curiously, my eyes are usually welled with tears when I write.“Creative. Invigorating. Writing is a way to make our lives available to ourselves, and to others.”

I love writing. Can be self serving in ways. Even can feel a bit arrogant at times. Over dramatic. I’ll often wonder, “How do others think about my writings?” But “erring on the side of openness” has always been a credo I’ve tried to live by.

I’ll often ask myself, “Is this too hackneyed, commonplace? Surely this is no revelation.” But then I think. All lives are unique. No one lives the life of another. No one has lived the life I’ve lived. Go for it!“Trust that our stories deserve to be told. The better we tell our stories, the more we will want to recall them. Relive them.” My greatest wish? As my grandchildren grow? Hope they might read my writings. A legacy of sorts. “This was your grandfather.” His loves. His passions. A little wisdom. All the fun he had. The joys. All here. In writing. For them to in a way relive them. With me.

I cannot thank George enough.  The verses he sent have given me added strength for the journey. Inspire me to reach further into whatever the Deep Well might send my way. Write it all down. In the heartfelt way I think my writings were intended.

Thanks be to God …
