Vast … shimmering … always active. But soothingly so. A gorgeous, sparkling blue.
This is the ocean. In all it’s wonderment.
It’s essence? … a fully spiritual phenomenon. An experience for me, like no other. Nancy and I are in Palm Beach, FLA for a few days celebrating the birthday of a dear friend. You cannot go to PB without visiting the Breakers. Henry Flagler’s 1896 gem nestled on the Atlantic. An imposing hotel and floral feast that despite its grandeur … is still upstaged by the ocean it sits on.
The ocean has been a signature part of my life. A source of calm. An assurance for me always that there is God.
Just think about this:
· Over 70% of our world is ocean, water.
· There are 343 million trillion (quintillion) gallons of water that cover our earth.
To imagine any being, human or otherwise that could create the oceans? Well, you try. I cannot.
Every time I set my toes in sand and walk to the water, I feel like I’m in reunion with an old friend. But one I’m so in awe of. Find hard to comprehend.
The waves. Oh, the constancy of the waves. Rolling in and rolling out. In and out. Forever. They talk to me. It’s a conversation really. Few things in life have no measure. Are just fathomless. The firmament. The stars and galaxies for sure. The ocean. It comes to us softly, violently even. Its rhythmic, melodic sound is always there. Familiar to me. Always opens me so.
The message that comes to me when I’m with the ocean? Simply, “God is.”
Whenever I go to a place with an ocean, I’m always compelled go, be with the ocean.
I’ll go there this afternoon. Take a few deep breaths. Even dive in and ride a few waves. The salt water always revives, rejuvenates me. Even the taste of the salty water enhances my swim.
God gives us ocean. Who knows what its mystery might more provide us someday. I’ll just continue to go to the water. As so many millions do every year. But for every one of us. Our visits will help us grow … if only a tiny bit each time.
For me? Each time I’m with the ocean, I’m moved. Sent on my path with a little more energy. Fueled by the confidence that God is real. He is with me.
And like the ocean … always.
